Influence in Project Work: Reading the Room Without Playing Games
A sound recommendation still needs to be understood, considered and acted on by people with different priorities.

Technical correctness does not implement itself
A recommendation can be well supported and still remain unresolved. The person receiving it may lack authority, face another priority or not understand the consequence of waiting. Repeating the same technical explanation may not address that obstacle.
Influence begins with understanding how a decision is made. It is useful in design, construction and project delivery; it is not a substitute for a sound technical basis.
Read the room by asking better questions
Who can approve? Who will carry out the decision? Who bears the operational consequences? Who has relevant information but has not been consulted? These questions identify a decision environment without guessing personalities.
Listen to the concern behind an objection. “We cannot close that area” may reflect service continuity, not resistance to the design. Discuss the constraint before asking for agreement.
Translate the recommendation into a decision
State the issue, the options, the important consequences and the decision needed. Explain uncertainty honestly. Make the request proportionate: a preliminary discussion is different from final authorisation.
In a hypothetical shutdown discussion, an operator may need the service impact while a sponsor needs the cost and approval route. Adapt the explanation to their responsibilities, while keeping the underlying facts consistent. Tailoring is useful; concealing a material consequence is not.
Influence also has boundaries
The Project Management Institute (PMI) identifies communication and collaborative leadership as important project skills. [1] We draw a distinction between helping people make an informed decision and manoeuvring them into an uninformed one.
Do not promise someone else’s resources or use informal agreement to bypass an approval. If a decision remains blocked, make the unresolved issue visible through the appropriate route. For candidates, ask what authority the role has and how recommendations reach the people who can act on them.
