Read experience and credential requirements carefully

Separate essential requirements, preferences and questions to clarify.

Separate the title from the screening criteria

Read the duties first, then mark each requirement as essential, preferred or unclear. Do not assume every item in a long advertisement is optional, and do not treat every preferred qualification as a barrier. A useful application responds to the employer’s actual screening criteria with specific evidence. If a requirement is ambiguous, ask the recruiting contact rather than rewriting it in your favour.

Read years of experience in context

Five years of general employment is not necessarily five years of the experience requested. Look for the subject attached to the number: bridge design, municipal approvals, nuclear delivery or capital projects, for example. Distinguish overall experience from years leading projects. When our board says “Years not specified”, it means the source did not provide a numeric duration; it does not mean that no experience is required.

Show your contribution accurately

For each relevant project, describe the context, your responsibilities, a deliverable and an outcome you can support. Separate work you led from work you assisted with. A clear example of coordinating design comments or tracking changes is more useful than an unsupported claim that you managed everything. Do not disclose client-confidential figures, drawings or documents to strengthen an application.

Check the credential with the right authority

In Ontario, Professional Engineers Ontario regulates professional engineering. A degree and a professional licence are different credentials. Check the employer’s wording and PEO’s current guidance for your situation; the category “Entry Level & EIT” on this board groups advertisements and does not confirm anyone’s registration or eligibility. Use accurate descriptions of your own qualifications.

Make a targeted application

Create a short evidence list against the essential requirements, then tailor your résumé to the responsibilities. Keep dates, qualifications and role descriptions consistent. Confirm the original application link and closing date before investing time. Follow the employer’s rules on application assistance and assessments; this guide is for understanding an advertisement, not for completing restricted screening exercises.
